Basilicata

Region of limited wine production in quantitative terms, the Basilicata however, it offers interesting ideas both from the point of view of local vines and the quality of the wines produced. The region is for the most part mountainous, although it has two outlets to the sea, on the Tyrrhenian Sea with the Gulf of Policastro and on the Ionian Sea, where it overlooks the Gulf of Taranto. These reliefs degrade into hills that are particularly suited to the cultivation of vines, especially at the foot of the Vulture. Also in Val d'Agri the particular pedoclimatic conditions and the particularly high altitude of cultivation create conditions of day-night and summer-winter temperature range that allow to obtain wines with surprising results. L'Aglianico del Vulture is the main vine in Basilicata, with over 60% of the vineyard area, which represents 90% of the production of PDO and PGI wines. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Montepulciano are grown in the Val d'Agri and in the Roccanova area. In the Matera area Primitivo is the main grape variety, also flanked here by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Other red grape varieties present in the region are Aleatico, Bombino Nero. Whites, although less common, include Malvasia Bianca, Verdeca, Bombino Bianco and Chardonnay.
