Campania

There Campania it is a region of ancient winemaking traditions, which in recent times has been able to give life to wines of the highest level both from white and red grape varieties.
The enological history of Campania has very ancient origins, prior to the Roman era and presumably begins with the arrival of the ancient Greeks. In fact, it was the Greeks who introduced the seeds of vitis vinifera in Campania: the main native grapes of the region, such as Aglianico, Greco, Fiano, Falanghina, Biancolella and Piedirosso are in fact of Greek origin. The highest concentration of vineyards is recorded in the province of Avellino, the area of choice first of all for Aglianico. In fact, the wine that represents its highest expression is produced in Irpinia: the Taurasi DOCG, a very rich, concentrated and complex wine, elegant and surprising, often referred to as the “Barolo of the South”. The interesting red wines of Taburno DOC and Sannio DOC are also produced with Aglianico, in the province of Benevento. Aglianico is also the main grape in the production of red wines from Falerno del Massico DOC, in the province of Caserta.
Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino managed to stand out among the whites of Campania, obtaining the recognition of the Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG) in 2003. They are, in fact, the most famous whites of Campania, together with those produced with the excellent Falanghina. The Greco di Tufo takes its name from the locality of the same name and is also produced in the sparkling version. It is composed largely of grapes of the Greek vine and to a lesser extent from Coda di Volpe and is a dry-bodied and rather fresh white wine. The more fragrant is instead Fiano di Avellino, which the Latins called Apianum, since the bees used to perch on the clusters hung to dry waiting to become sweet wine. It is an elegant and fragrant wine, complex and with a good structure, often underlined also by the aging in cask.
Among the other interesting wine areas of Campania there is Aversa, home of the famous Asprinio and Falerno del Massico DOC. The area of Vesuvius, on the other hand, is distinguished by the Lacryma Christi, produced in the dry version as white, red and rosé. Of particular interest is the Island of Ischia with its white wines from grapes Forastera And Biancolella and the reds with the Piedirosso.
