Oltrepò Pavese, an area between the provinces of Pavia and Alessandria, has always been known for massive production of red wines for mainly regional consumption.
In Valtellina the main grape is the Nebbiolo here called Chiavennasca, other autochthonous ones are the Pignola, the Rossola, the Brugnola, all black berried, rarely vinified alone and which are part of the blend of the classic wines of Valtellina. Nebbiolo gives rise to Sforzato di Valtellina or Sfursat di Valtellina DOCG, a wine obtained by partially drying the grapes, and to Valtellina Superiore DOCG.
In the Oltrepò Pavese, the most common grape is the Barbera, followed by Croatina, Bonarda and Uva Rara. Pinot Noir deserves a special mention, while the white wines are made with Riesling Italico, Moscati and Malvasie grapes. Oltrepò Pavese has recently established itself as a region of excellence for sparkling wine production (Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico DOCG).
There Franciacorta, in the area of Lake Iseo, is known for the cultivation of Pinot Nero, Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay vines. Franciacorta is also an area known for the production of classic method sparkling wine (Franciacorta DOCG).
