Sardinia

There Sardinia it has about 26,000 hectares of vineyards, which corresponds to a production of red and rosé wines for the 56% and of white wines for the 44%. The heritage of native grapes is quite rich, despite the presence of international grapes, which are usually used in the production of wines, often blended with local ones.

In the central and northern part of Sardinia there is a greater production of white wines, while the production of red wines is more concentrated in the southern part of the island. The main white grapes are: Malvasia Bianca, Malvasia di Sardegna, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Torbato, Vermentino and Vernaccia di Oristano. Among the black berried grapes, Bovale, Caddiu, Cagnulari, Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Monica and Nieddera are mentioned.

The most famous whites are produced with Vermentino which produces excellent wines throughout the island, but Gallura, in the northern part of the region, is the most classic and representative area. The Vermentino di Gallura it is the only DOCG wine of Sardinia. The main feature of this wine is its almond scent.

The Cannonau it is the most famous black berried grape of the island; it seems to have been introduced during the rule of the Spaniards, even if it is not entirely clear which is the original variety from which it comes. It is grown throughout the region, although the most typical area is that of Nuoro. Cannonau, especially that of the Oliena area, is a wine with a high alcohol content and robust structure.

There Vernaccia di Oristano it is one of the most evocative and ancient wines of Sardinia, since the first historical information concerning it dates back to 1300. The production is quite different from the oenological techniques of normal white wines. The maturation of Vernaccia di Oristano takes place, in fact, in full chestnut barrels, and above the surface of the wine develops a colony of yeasts (flor) which over time give the wine complex and unique organoleptic qualities. During the refinement, which can last for decades, the wine comes to express extraordinary aromas of almond, hazelnut and its typical aroma of "rancio".
