Trentino has a vineyard area of approximately 9,000 hectares. Alto Adige, on the other hand, has less than 5000 hectares of vineyards, all in mountain or foothills areas. Viticulture in this region experienced the first important period of development at the time of ancient Rome, but the first cultivations of the vine date back to the times of the Etruscans.
In Trentino mainly red wines are produced; the three native black grape varieties of reference are Marzemino in the area south of Trento, Teroldegonella Piana Rotaliana north of Trento and Schiava (in the variants Schiava grigio, Schiava grossa and Schiava gentile) further up on the provincial borders with the 'South Tyrol. In the Trento area there are also Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero and Cabernet. The most cultivated white grape varieties are the international Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco which, together with Pinot Noir, enter the sparkling wine production of the classic method. Trento DOC.
L'South Tyrol has an extremely interesting and varied wine production, characterized by both international wines and important native vines. The cool climate and the particular environmental and geological conditions make the white wines of Alto Adige among the best in Italy. Among the white berried grapes we find the Gewürztraminer, originally coming from the area of Termeno (Tramin), while to the north of Bolzano, in the Val d'Isarco and in the Val Venosta we also find the Kerner and the Sylvaner. Moscato Rosa and Moscato Giallo are also widespread (Rosenmuskateller and Goldmuskateller) the first in the form of passito wines even of considerable thickness, the second very pleasant especially in the dry version. Red wines, especially those produced with Lagrein and with Pinot Noir, they also boast results of absolute excellence. Lagrein is a very versatile grape, with which both pleasant rosé wines (Lagrein Kretzer) and red wines of remarkable structure and longevity are produced, better known as Lagrein Dunkel (dark).
