The Friuli Venezia Giulia it has always been the land of great white wines. The rich heritage of native grape varieties has been enriched over time with many international varieties, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Nero.
Tocai Friulano, Verduzzo Friulano, Picolit, Refosco dal Penducolo Rosso, Schioppetino, Pignolo and Tazzelenghe are native grapes of Friuli Venezia Giulia, while Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia Istriana, present in the area for centuries, were probably introduced during the 13th century. Gewürztraminer, Müller-Thurgau, Riesling and Riesling Italico, Franconia (Blaufränkisch) were introduced in Friuli from Austria.
The production areas are divided geographically: Collio, Colli Orientali del Friuli, Grave and Ramandolo.
Collio is located in the eastern part of the region, in the province of Gorizia, and is particularly famous for the production of white wines. Tocai Friulano And Ribolla yellow are the most important grape varieties grown in this area, flanked by international grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
The Colli Orientali del Friuli area is the second in terms of fame and importance in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and is located further north-west, in the province of Udine. Here one of the most sought after and famous passito wines in Italy is produced, the Picolit.
The Grave area is the largest denomination in the region and extends from the province of Udine to the west up to that of Pordenone. Its name derives from the soil, rich in stones and gravel, suitable for producing excellent wines. It represents over two thirds of the regional wine production. The wines of the Grave generally have less complexity than those of the Collio or the Colli Orientali del Friuli, however the average level of quality of the wines of the appellation is among the highest in Italy. In the Grave, white wines are produced from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Tocai Friulano grapes, while the production of red wines is mainly based on international Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes and on the native vine Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.
The Ramandolo area, before 2001, was a sub-area of the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC appellation. In that year it was proclaimed the first DOCG of the region, which today has four. The homonymous sweet wine from grapes is produced there Verduzzo Friulano, starting from both overripe and dried grapes.
