Small in size, with its 17,000 hectares of vineyards, Umbria has a predominantly hilly morphology which makes it a region particularly suited for vines and wine. Both white and black grapes are grown in Umbria, with a wine production almost equally divided between white and red.
The Grechetto, autochthonous grape of Umbria is the most important of the white berried ones. It is widespread throughout the region and with it both pure white wines and blended wines are produced, for example with Chardonnay. Other white berried grapes are Malvasia Bianca, Trebbiano Toscano, Verdello, Canaiolo Bianco and Procanico.
The Sagrantino, despite the limited presence in Montefalco, it produces the most representative red wines of all of Umbria, appreciated all over the world. It is a robust and powerful wine, with a notable tannic charge and a significant organoleptic richness. Black berried grapes also present in the region are Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Canaiolo Nero, Montepulciano, Barbera and Gamay (native grape of Burgundy) introduced in the area of Lake Trasimeno over a century ago.
International grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco and Riesling, as well as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Nero and Cabernet Franc, are also present in the region.
